Rosa Parks Race of Dreams

Beyond Elite Productions sponsors its 3rd Annual 5K Community Race and Walk in the Leimert Park community of Los Angeles. This annual event brings together professional runners, community leaders and families for a morning of exercise and fun. Special Needs Network, Inc., the non-profit started by Areva is the charity selected to receive a donation from the race. Areva will join hundreds of others as they walk and run for those children living with autism. |

Keeping Students Safe
February, 2008
Throughout the month of February, Areva will present workshops at schools, community centers and churches on keeping students safe in schools. Areva designed this workshop for parents, educators and stakeholders to address the growing number of cases involving school abuse related to teachers, students and third parties. This 90 minute interactive workshop provides practical strategies that can be implemented to keep students safe on elementary, secondary and college campuses. First AME Church Trailblazer Award

First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles will present Areva with its 2008 Trailblazer Award on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at its 12 noon service. Areva is being honored for her work on behalf of women and children and her contribution to the Los Angeles legal community. First AME Church of Los Angeles is the oldest African American church in Los Angeles. Biddy Mason, a former slave, started the church in the late 1800s. With over 19,000 members, First AME has one of the country’s largest congregations. The church is located at 2229 Harvard Blvd. in Los Angeles. This service is open to the public.

Counsel of Parent Attorney Advocacy Conference

Areva will present a workshop on Charter Schools at the annual Counsel of Parent Attorney Advocacy Conference on Sunday, March 9, 2008. This conference brings together hundreds of attorneys, parents and advocates from all over the country for three full days of workshops related to education and advocacy. Real Leaders Wear Pink

In honor of National Women’s History Month, Areva’s signature series, Real Leaders Wear Pink welcomes California Majority Leader Karen Bass to the Ebell of Los Angeles for Women Who are Shaping the World. The program and lunch begin at 11:30 am at the historic all women’s club located at 734 Lucerne Blvd., Los Angeles. Join Los Angeles’ top female professionals in an intimate discussion on women in leadership with the state’s top African American elected official. Following Areva’s introduction of Assemblymember Bass and her keynote address, Areva will facilitate a question and answer session. Journey to the Top Book Signing and Writer’s Workshop

Join Areva and author/attorney Pam Samuels as they discuss the ins and outs of writing and publishing fiction and non-fiction books. Pam, the author of several legal thrillers, will lead a discussion on fictional books and Areva will lead a discussion n non-fiction books. Following the presentations and questions, each will sign copies of their books. This event will be on Saturday, March 22, 2008 from 2pm to 4pm at Westchester Christian Church, 8740 La Tijera Blvd., Los Angeles. Mother-Daughter Luncheon

Areva will be the keynote speaker at her alma mater, Rosati-Kain’s, Mother-Daughter Luncheon in St. Louis as a part of its commencement exercises for the class of 2008. Areva will delight the audience with tales from her days at Rosati and lessons learned from her mother, grandmothers and daughters. Following the Luncheon, Areva will sign copies of her career book for women, Journey to the Top.
Tools for Transformation: Building Confidence and Capacity

KJLH Women’s Health Summit

Second Annual Smart Cookie Awards

Areva was selected among an elite group of women this year to be honored with a “Smart Cookie Award” by Cookie magazine. Featured in the May issue of Cookie magazine among five other “Smart Cookie Award” recipients Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lee Woodruff, Christie Brinkley, Roni Lomeli and Karenna Gore Schiff, Areva is recognized for the Special Need Network’s efforts to provide resources and skills training for families, especially low income ones, with autistic or developmentally disabled children. The award will be presented at a gala event on Monday, April 21, 2008 at the Morgan Library. In addition to the specially designed gold necklace, each award recipient received a monetary donation for their respective charities. Areva will join the thousands of physicians and their spouses who will converge on Atlanta, Georgia for the biggest medical conference of the year for African American doctors and their spouses. Areva will participate on a panel discussion on legal issues associated with caring for aging and disabled loved ones. She will be joined by nationally recognized physicians and experts who work with the disabled population. Central California Women’s Conference September 9, 2008
Areva presents at the 21st Annual Central California Women’s Conference. Areva joins Suze Orman and other prominent women experts at the September 9, 2008 conference. CCWC is a forum for women of all generations and backgrounds to share practical ideas on how to succeed in their careers while juggling increasingly complex and diverse life demands. The conference provides an exciting and fun atmosphere, where women come together to network. The HELP Group Conference

Areva presents a workshop on providing culturally competent care and services to low-income families at the HELP Group’s Annual Autism Conference at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Areva joins Dr. Barbara Firestone, CEO of the HELP Group and Vice-Chair of the California Blue Ribbon Commission on Autism and other renowned experts in the fields of education, autism and advocacy. Areva, the only attorney and African-American female member of the 16-member Blue Ribbon Commission, provided professionals with strategies and techniques for creating a model of trust and delivering services to children with autism and other developmental disabilities in poor communities.

This event brings together more than 300 participants including elected officials, corporate executives, celebrities and community leaders to raise money for autism awareness and programs. Featuring award-winning solo artists Johnny Gill, the event also included a live and silent auction. This year, Special Needs Network is presented with a gift of $200,000 to launch the Joe Patton Advanced Learning Academy and Beyond Barriers Award.

Autism Conference

Areva presents the keynote address at Fiesta’ Educativa’s Annual Autism Conference. Celebrating 30 years of providing resources, advocacy and services to the Spanish speaking community in Los Angeles, Areva encourages and motivates parents to continue their strident advocacy activities. She provides the hundreds of participants with an overview of four newly passed pieces of legislation in the state of California, which provide for additional resources for adults and children with autism.
